AMR Initiative Rwanda launched a national Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Awareness Campaign in early 2024 to strengthen community understanding of hygiene, sanitation, and antimicrobial resistance prevention. This effort plays a vital role in reducing infections, limiting the spread of resistant microbes, and reinforcing health system resilience.

Objectives

  • Promote hand hygiene, sanitation, and safe infection control practices
  • Raise public awareness about the links between infection and antimicrobial resistance
  • Engage communities through youth ambassadors, local leaders, and health educators
  • Support Rwanda’s National Action Plan on AMR through grassroots initiatives

Community Approach

We partnered with community health workers, district hospitals, youth volunteers, and local NGOs to deliver targeted IPC messages. Our team distributed educational materials, led door-to-door outreach, and hosted interactive demonstrations, especially in rural and high-risk areas.

Materials Distributed

  • Posters, flyers, and radio announcements in Kinyarwanda
  • Hygiene kits: soaps, sanitizer, and handwashing buckets
  • Guidelines on safe antibiotic use and wound care

Impact

Early evaluations show improved hand hygiene compliance in health facilities and higher awareness of AMR prevention among students and caregivers. Testimonials from rural health centers reveal stronger patient engagement in IPC practices.

Next Steps

  • Expand the campaign to 15 more districts by 2026
  • Train more IPC Youth Ambassadors and peer educators
  • Integrate digital messaging platforms for follow-up engagement
