Infection Prevention – AMR Initiative Rwanda

Infection Prevention

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) is a cornerstone in reducing the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). At AMR Initiative Rwanda, we promote evidence-based IPC practices in homes, health facilities, farms, and communities as part of our One Health approach.

Why It Matters:
Most AMR-related infections are preventable. Poor hygiene, lack of clean water, and inadequate IPC standards in hospitals or clinics can lead to resistant infections that are harder to treat and more likely to spread.

Our IPC Focus Areas

  • Hand hygiene: Promoting regular handwashing with soap or alcohol-based sanitizers in both clinical and community settings.
  • Sterilization & Waste Management: Training healthcare workers on safe instrument use, proper waste disposal, and cleaning protocols.
  • Vaccination: Encouraging immunization to reduce the need for antimicrobial treatments.
  • Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH): Advocating for access to clean water and sanitation to prevent infections in schools, homes, and clinics.
  • Isolation & Surveillance: Promoting infection tracking and separation of infected individuals in health facilities to prevent cross-transmission.

Training & Community Engagement

We conduct workshops and training sessions for:

  • Health workers and nurses in public and private hospitals
  • Veterinary professionals and animal health technicians
  • Students and youth leaders through schools and universities
  • Community health workers and local leaders during Umuganda activities

Partnerships

Our IPC work is guided by global standards and supported by collaborations with institutions like:

  • Ministry of Health – Rwanda
  • World Health Organization (WHO)
  • Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC)
  • ZeroX Intelligence – for digital WASH education tools
