Published by AMR Initiative Rwanda
AMR Initiative Rwanda is a Kigali-based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the responsible use of antimicrobials, conducting research, and implementing infection prevention and control across human, animal, and environmental health sectors.
Our Mission & Vision
We embrace a One Health approach to:
- Increase national AMR awareness through education and training.
- Strengthen surveillance and evidence-based research.
- Reduce infection incidence via improved sanitation and hygiene.
- Optimize antimicrobial use in health, agriculture, and veterinary sectors.
- Integrate artificial intelligence in AMR solutions.
- Advance research and development efforts.
This mission drives us to educate communities and build capacity across sectors.
Strategic Approaches to Education
Our awareness and education initiatives include:
- University Engagement: Campus tours raising awareness among pharmacy, veterinary, and life-science students.
- Professional Training: Collaboration with health authorities to integrate AMR into healthcare training and curricula.
- Community Outreach: Umuganda-based awareness campaigns in rural districts.
- Digital & Youth Campaigns: Leveraging social media to empower young professionals and students in AMR advocacy.
- Sectoral Workshops: Joint education programs with FAO, WHO, and national stakeholders as part of the National AMR Action Plan.
Building Capacity for Lasting Impact
We provide:
- Curriculum support to embed AMR topics in healthcare and veterinary education.
- Training for community health workers, pharmacists, and veterinary professionals.
- Educational materials—flyers, posters, media content—customized for target audiences.
- Evaluation and feedback systems delivered through surveys and stakeholder consultations.
Why It Matters
In Rwanda, AMR was responsible for approximately 2,400 direct deaths in 2019, with another 9,800 associated deaths. Awareness and education are pivotal to:
- Reducing misuse of antimicrobial agents.
- Empowering informed decision-making in healthcare communities.
- Strengthening One Health collaboration.
- Ensuring responsible and rational antimicrobial use.
Join Our Educational Efforts
We invite schools, universities, healthcare facilities, and community groups to join our educational programs. Through partnership, training, and shared resources, together we can protect current and future generations from the threat of antimicrobial resistance.
